Our guide to REI’s Biggest Sale of the Year: The 2024 Anniversary Sale
Deals we found on Treeline Review vetted award winning gear
It’s that time of year again for REI’s best sale to celebrate their 86th anniversary. We pored over the catalog and scanned the sale for the best finds. These are the 24 best deals from this year’s Anniversary Sale, all items that Treeline writers and reviewers love and recommend.
In addition to the heap of sale items, as is standard at all of these annual sales, REI is offering 20% off one full-priced item and 20% off one outlet item. It’s the perfect time to snag big ticket items like the burly Arc’teryx Beta LT rain jacket (in our Best Lightweight Rain Jackets review) or On Cloudmonster road running shoes that rarely go on sale.
Lastly, you can get 20% off your entire order of Used Gear from REI. Used Gear is better for the environment and your wallet.

1. The North Face Wawona 6 Camping Tent
The Wawona 6 is like a luxury home for your campsite, with ample space for the whole family. It’s our best overall winner in our review of the Best Camping Tents. It has over 86 square feet of floor space, a massive vestibule, and plenty of height for standing room inside. It’s durable and sturdy and has plenty of pockets for storage. At 40% off, this is one of the best deals we’ve seen on a solid tent like this.
2. Garmin InReach Mini 2 Satellite Messenger
The Garmin InReach Mini 2 is a go-to for us—a crucial piece of safety gear worth taking on any backcountry adventure. It’s the overall winner in our Best Satellite Messenger and Personal Locator Beacons review and has a new in-depth review. It’s feature-packed with two-way texting, a satellite-powered SOS button, and great battery life. This deal is a rare find.
3. Garmin Fenix 7X Pro Solar Sapphire GPS Watch
Our upgrade pick for the best hiking and backpacking watch isn’t cheap, but this deal makes it a great value. This is a top-of-the-line GPS watch, with superior tracking, full color maps, and up to 89 hours of battery life in GPS mode. The deal is good for all Fenix model watches, so you can pick and choose the upgrades you want, from Sapphire glass to solar charging. Learn more in our in-depth review on the Garmin Fenix 7X Pro.
4. Nathan Pinnacle 12 Running Vest
A good vest is essential for long runs, and the Nathan Pinnacle is one of our top choices and a winner in our Best Running Hydration Vests review. The Pinnacle is ideal for runners who like to carry a reservoir for water rather than bottles. At 12.5 ounces, it’s reasonably light, especially for being decked out with pockets—a whole 13 of them. It’s available in men’s and women’s versions, and will be 25% off during the sale. As one of the more expensive vests we recommend (and it's worth it!), this is a good time to pick it up if you've been waiting for a sale.
5. Hest Dually Camping Mattress
The Hest Dually Camping Mattress is a luxury for car campers and van dwellers. It’s constructed with two layers of dense and plush foam that makes it feel a lot more like your bed at home than a typical camping mattress. It folds up to make a thicker platform for one person, or opens up to sleep two. Our writer and tester uses the Dually for just about everything, and you can read his full review here. It also won our award for Most Comfortable Camping Mattress. The downside to this mattress is that it’s also priced like a luxury camp item, but you can snag it for 25% off during the sale.
6. Thule T2 Pro X
It’s not often that large hardgoods like Thule bike racks go on sale. Our overall winner in our review of The Best Bike Racks for Cars, the Thule T2 Pro X is a versatile and durable tray rack. It’s 20% off during the sale, and we think this is likely one of the best deals you’ll find on a quality rack like this.
7. REI Magma Sleeping Bag
The Magma sleeping bag is a favorite among Treeline testers and one of the winners in our Best Sleeping Bags review. The 15-degree bag weighs just over 2 pounds and comes in a variety of sizes with different widths and lengths. It’s stuffed with 850-fill power down that’s treated with a hydrophobic coating. It’s already one of our favorite bags for its value, and it’s an even better buy at 30% off. The same also applies to their ultralight quilt.
8. ExPed MegaMat Duo 10
The Exped MegaMat Duo 10 is our winner for Best Couples mattress in our Best Camping Mattresses review and a favorite for couples who don’t want to pack two separate pads. It’s self-inflating and super comfortable, making camp life look easy and plush. It also includes a nice layer of insulation for an extra barrier between your back and the cold ground. Exped mattresses are 25% off during the sale, including the extra-insulated and thicker MegaMat Max 15.
9. La Sportiva Jackal II Trail Running Shoes
The La Sportiva Jackal II is the overall winner in our Best Men's Trail Running Shoes upgrade pick for our Best Women’s Trail Running Shoes, and an excellent choice for runners going long distances on rough trails. At 25% off, that brings these shoes down to a price comparable to other running shoes while still boasting awesome features like a rock plate and grippy tread.
10. Altra Lone Peak 7 Trail Running Shoes
While there’s now a Lone Peak 8—which is currently in our best men’s trail running shoes and best women’s trail running shoes reviews—previous iterations of this shoe, including the Lone Peak 7, have long been favorites of Treeline testers, trail runners, and thru-hikers. This is one of the best deals we’ve seen on these popular shoes. With an ultra-wide toe box, breathable mesh upper, comfortable cushion, and zero-drop design, these are a favorite for a reason.
11. Black Diamond Spot 400 Headlamp
The Spot 400 is a reliable companion on nights at camp and dawn patrols on dark trails. It’s a comfortable headlamp with excellent battery life that works well in weather from clear to stormy. At 400 lumens, it’s brighter than many other headlamps with similar weights and battery life. This winner in our Best Headlamps review is 25% off during the sale (along with a heap of other Black Diamond hardgoods).
12. Chaco Z/1 Hiking Sandals
The Chaco Z series is easily one of the most ubiquitous outdoor sandals and for good reason: They’re durable and functional in a variety of terrain, from day hikes and river crossings to nights at the campground and out at the brewery in town afterwards. The original Z/1 design is a winner in our Best Camp Shoes review for these reasons and more. You can snag these (and all other Z models) during the sale at 25% off.
13. Mountain Hardwear Mineral King 3 Camping Tent
The Mineral King 3 is a Swiss army knife of tents and a favorite among Treeline testers. It’s a winner in our Best Camping Tents review thanks to that versatility, easy set-up, and excellent waterproofing. The ample stargazing mesh on the tent body and dual vestibules are just the cherries on top of an already excellent design. This is one of the best deals we’ve seen on a quality tent like this.
14. Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL2 Ultralight Tent
Big Agnes has dialed the Copper Spur HV UL2 to near perfection for backpackers looking for a lightweight but still fully-featured double-wall tent. With a trail weight under 3 pounds, this freestanding 2-person tent is ideal for all but the most ultralight missions and is one of the winners in our Best Backpacking Tents review and our Best Bikepacking Tents guide. It includes features like dual doors and vestibules, vents in the rain fly to mitigate condensation, and gear lofts to stash essentials at night. Snag this tent at 30% off during the sale.
15. Nemo Disco 30 Endless Promise Sleeping Bag
The Nemo Disco 30 Endless Promise sleeping bag is our favorite sleeping bag for plus-size folks and one of the winners in our Best Sleeping Bags review—and it’s 25% off during REI’s sale. The 30 degree temperature rating is ideal for summer (other versions and temp ratings are also part of the sale). The hydrophobic treated 650-fill down is warm, light, and PFAS-free and Responsible Down Standard certified. Read our in-depth review on the Nemo Disco Endless Promise for more info.
16. Smith Wildcat ChromaPop Sunglasses
The Smith Wildcat ChromaPop sunglasses (and the smaller-framed Bobcat) are all over the trails, from summer mountain bike singletrack to winter backcountry skin tracks. They’re versatile sunglasses with excellent coverage, a comfortable fit, and polarized ChromaPop lenses that can be easily swapped out to suit the lighting conditions. Our writers love these sunglasses for road and mountain biking, backcountry skiing, nordic skiing, and more. And while they’re a bit of a splurge, it’s easier to justify when they’re on sale (along with all other Smith sunglasses, like the Embark—great for mountaineering, winter camping, and all-season use).
17. Outdoor Research Astroman Air Sun Hoodie
A sun hoodie is nearly a necessity for anyone who spends a lot of time on the water, in the high alpine, or anywhere where the sun is hard to hide from. We love the Astroman especially for climbing, thanks to the light, stretchy, and super durable 50+ UPF fabric. It’s a winner in our Best Sun Shirts review. The quarter-zip design makes it easy to slip on and off, even with a helmet on, and other features like a zippered chest pocket and loop to hang on your harness when packed away make this hoodie a stand-out. This (and previous seasons’ Outdoor Research apparel) is at least 25% off during the sale.
18. Smartwool Athlete Edition Run Print Crew
Wool socks reign king for most outdoor activities, and we love these Smartwool socks for hikes and runs when you want something lightweight. The Athlete Edition Run Print Crew socks are a winner in our Best Hiking Socks review. They’re made with a blend of 52% merino wool, which helps with wicking and odor control, and synthetic materials that add durability. The Athlete Edition comes in fun colors and patterns often designed by small, independent artists. All Smartwool socks are 25% off during the sale.
19. Salomon X Ultra 4 Mid GTX Hiking Boots
One of the best hiking boots we’ve ever tested and the overall winner in our Best Lightweight Hiking Boots story, these are at home on just about any trail. They balance breathability and waterproofing well, thanks to the Gore-Tex membrane, and have beefy lugs on the Vibram soles that provide excellent traction without adding too much weight. We go into details about why we like these boots in our In-depth Review of the Salomon X Ultra 4 Mid GTX. Get these boots at a 25% discount during the sale.
20. Brooks 3 Pocket Sports Bra
This high-coverage sports bra is a winner in both our best AA-D and D+ sports bras reviews. It’s a great high-impact option for smaller-chested folks, and for those with more weight to support, this is a versatile medium-impact bra. The integrated pockets are great for storing small items like car keys or energy gels when you're out without a pack, and the high coverage means you can really move in this bra without any worry of slip-ups. The 3 Pocket Sports Bra (and other Brooks bras) is 30% off.
21. Five ten Freerider Mountain Bike Shoes
The Five Ten Freerider is the overall winner in our Best Mountain Bike Shoes review for folks who ride with flat pedals. This popular shoe is 25% off during the sale. It’s a durable option with a stiff sole and sticky rubber that helps your feet stay gripped to the pedals, even on rough trails. We love the overall comfort and burly design of these shoes.
22. Wild Rye Freel Mountain Bike Shorts
The Wild Rye Freel shorts are perfect for ladies who love to rock some pattern and color on the singletrack without sacrificing function and durability. The Freel shorts are a winner in our Best Women’s Mountain Bike Shorts story. They get our pick for style, but they’re equally functional and supremely durable. And they’re rarely on sale, so get them while they’re 25% off.
23. REI Swiftland Running Shorts
We reviewed the Swiftland shorts in both our Best Men’s Running Shorts and Best Women’s Running Shorts stories. They’re great shorts and already a great value at full price. But during the sale they’ll be 30% off (along with all other REI-brand apparel). The wide waistband is comfortable and the light fabric keeps chafing at bay. A small pocket on the back of the waistband is great for stashing small items.
24. NRS Vapor PFD
Our overall winner in our Best Life Jackets and PFDs story—the NRS Vapor—is 25% off during the Anniversary Sale. This low-profile PFD comes in a wide range of sizes and is comfortable to wear for long periods of time spent rowing or paddling. It’s versatile and can be used for both flatwater and whitewater. Plus, it’s a good value, especially when on sale.
