While there is some debate, most folks draw the line at 2 pounds as the difference between an ultralight tent and a backpacking tent.

A bivy is a protective bag that goes over your sleeping bag or sleeping quilt. It keeps dew and condensation off your bag whether you are cowboy camping (sleeping under the starts without a tarp or tent) or whether your single-wall backpacking tent has condensation. We’re big fans of fanny packs here at Treeline Review and have reviewed quite a few fanny packs, waist packs, and lumbar packs over the years. Some of our favorite ultralight options aimed at thru-hikers are on sale. Fanny packs, in our experience, should last at least one thru-hike (so for the rest of us, that means years). Bear Canisters and Bear Bags

Bear canisters are a required in many backpacking areas, including the many national parks like Yosemite. Even when not required by law, having a way to protect your food from wildlife (and wildlife from food) is a good idea. These items last many years so it’s worth picking one up during the sale so you don’t have to worry about rentals or hunting one down before your next trip in a place with aggressive wildlife.

Water treatment is a must for backpackers. While many filters in theory will last years, we’ve found that they often slow down over time. And any filter that you suspect may have been exposed to below freezing temperatures should be replaced. If that’s you (or your backpacking partner), grab a water filter while they are on sale. Insect Repellent and Head Nets
You’ll find insect repellent and tick protection is an essential backpacking accessory that can make-or-break a backpacking trip. There’s nothing worse than being in the Wind River Range or in the Sierra and wishing you had picked up a bug net or remembered your bug spray.
Whether to carry these small items are often a game-day decision as you leave the trailhead and we’ve found that gear stores near mosquito-y trailhead often go out of stock in prime season. We like to always have a mosquito net and bug spray on hand—and the sale is a great chance to have them for when you’ll need them.
